WHO’S DRAGOBETE?
People say that Dragobete was the son of Baba Dochia or also called The Old Dokia. She is usually identified as an old woman who is related to the return of spring and always insults the month of March when she goes out with a herd of sheep or goats. So Dragobete, as her son, has the same relationship with the spring. Dragobete is related to spring arrival and brings the end of the winter.
Some people say that Dragobete also has endless kindness and that’s why he was chosen to be called the Guardian of Love or even the saint patron of birds. That’s why it is believed that February 24 is that day when everything comes to live. It’s a celebration related to fertility and the rebirth of nature. Birds begin to build their nests and mate. All people gather with flowers and sing.
TRADITIONS IS MUST!
For example, it is believed that at Dragobete, stepping over a partner's foot will make that person dominant in the relationship.
Also, during the Dragobete celebration, young people go to the woods to pick flowers. It is believed that if a boy finds strawberry flowers, he’s the luckiest. While returning home, boys run after girls and try to kiss them. Of course, if the girl likes the boy, she lets him kiss her. That’s how many relationships are born that day and made public. People say that "Dragobetele sărută fetele" or in English - „Dragobete kisses the girls“.
Fun thing we know that men should not annoy women at the Dragobete, otherwise, their love life might fall apart. Like it’s not the risk for it every single day.
YOU CAN CELEBRATE EVEN IF YOU ARE SINGLE!
Of course, if you are single you shouldn’t be sad.
Even though St. Valentine’s day usually makes single people sad, for Dragobete celebration single people shouldn’t be sad. They should celebrate also!
First of all, those who will be sad on that day, will bring nothing but sorrow and trouble to themselves in the following months. Second, if you are single, but meet and hug at least one person that you are attracted to, your love life may be better from that moment.
And there’s a lot of various traditions which may be private, depending on culture, but everybody can be sure that this celebration is different from St. Valentine’s is for everyone and is dedicated for more noble things than just materiality.
